The first Kingsman film was a huge hit - no surprise as it was directed by Matthew Vaughan and written by Jane Goldman - the dream team behind the comic book super-hit Kick-Ass. Returning forthe sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle they have expanded the world of elite secret service agents by moving the story onto the US, when Eggsy (Egerton) discovers an allied spy organisation in the US called Statesman introducing Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges to the cast.
Kingsman The Golden Circle is a good film that doesn’t quite live up the original - probably because of the fact that it is no longer new to us. Everyone loves an origin story right? That said there is plenty of action, spy gadgets and humour on display here to keep fans of the original film happy whilst also winning new fans.
After the entirety of the Kingsman organisation is blown up in the UK following a rogue ex-Kingsman trainee defecting to the other side the action is shifted to America - it is a little unusual for a film about English super spies to be set in the USA, but it does work and the differences between the English and Americans is interesting.
The addition of Julianne Moore (a bit of an odd villain), Halle Berry (under-used), Bridges (brilliant as always) and Tatum (funny) to the cast does bloat the film a little with big name stars but who could complain at a film packed with A list actors?
The direction is certainly solid and the script is taut enough to keep viewers hooked throughout the run time. A third Kingsman film is already in the making and it will be a welcome addition to the Kingsman films.
