Vengeance DVD Review

Definitely not to be confused with Brendan Fraser’s latest film – Furry Vengeance – this is an oh-so-slightly darker film, with an entirely different, more bloody form, of Vengeance.

French actor Johnny Hallyday plays the role of Costello, a Parisian restaurateur, who travels to Macau when his daughter is after she is attacked by Triad hit. Her husband and two small children have been brutally murdered and he sets out to track down the killers and have his vengeance.

Hong Kong action director Johnnie To filmed on location throughout Hong Kong and Macau and the films looks great. Director To has put together some excellently choreographed gunplay and actions scenes to counterpoint the scenes of intense dialogue.

There are plot holes and moments of utter illogicalness as well as some laughable dialogue, but Vengeance is still an interesting, if overly violent film with lots of blood and an out of control body-count. Cheng Siu Keung's cinematography gives the film a nice noir-esque sense.

In terms of image and sound quality in all honesty I hardly noticed that I was watching a blu-ray. It’s certainly not poor quality but it definitely didn’t blow me away. Also on the disc are a trailer and a ‘making of’ featurette.
