perrier's Bounty DVDCillian Murphy (Red Eye, 28 Days Later) is Michael McCrea a guy about to have a bad week when he wakes up to find a couple of gangster’s cronies in his flat looking for money (or some broken bones if Michael is a few quid short – which he is) as repayment of a loan from a local gangster, Darren Perrier, played by Brendan Gleeson (28 Days Later, Green Zone).

Jim Broadbent (always excellent as anyone’s Dad – see Bridget Jones / And When Did You Last See Your Father? / Hot Fuzz) is Jim McCrea, Michael’s Dad (!) who has had a dream where he met Death who told him he was soon to die. He won’t go to sleep because he believes that if he does he won’t wake up again. He gets involved in Michael’s predicament. Jodie Whittaker (so talented in Venus) is Brenda, Michael’s next door neighbour who also inadvertently gets involved in Michael’s life with a bang, when she shoots one of the henchmen!

This is a fun and funny gangster film. But it also has its fair share of violence. It’s a fairly adult film and basically (and I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way) I enjoyed it because it is not your average 15 certificate film that’s hoping to sell itself to a mass audience. I get fed up with watching films aimed at 15 year olds to be honest. It’s a bit like a British version of Pulp Fiction.

Written by Mark O'Rowe, Perrier’s Bounty seems very real. It doesn’t pander to viewers. It gives what appears to be a fairly honest account of what it would be like to tangle with a pretty nasty gangster. It’s well directed by Ian Fitzgibbon and at just 88 minutes it doesn’t outstay its welcome either.

Perrier’s Bounty is a breath of fresh air from the slew of films aimed at teenagers. This is violent, profane and fun.
