Rural France in the 1930s. Garris and Riton live in the marais, a quiet region along the banks of the loire. Riton, afflicted with a bad tempered wife and 3 unruly children, seeks solace and the memory of his first wife in wine, while Garris lives alone with his recollections of World War 1 trenches. Tane, the local train conducter, Amedee, a dreamer and a voracious reader of classics and Pepe who built his fortune in industry, also belong to the group of freinds.
