Festival in Cannes (2001) - Synopsis

Festival in Cannes (2001) - synopsis headingWelcome to the sun-and-star-drenched shores of Cannes, France, where movie stars and
wanna-bes, power-brokers and voyeurs, hedonists and hopefuls, the glamorous and the
infamous come once a year on an obsessive quest: be it for the perfect role, the sweetest deal
or quite simply love.

Festival in Cannes is a biting romantic comedy Henry Jaglom-style, a spontaneously
erupting trio of love stories covering three generations that unfolds amidst the free-for-all
atmosphere of moviedom's biggest party. With his 13th film, Jaglom plunges directly into
the mad heart of the film universe to bring back this funny and fearless tale about what
happens to real people caught up in a dizzying realm of fantasy where art battles commerce
and deals are built on fragile personal dreams.

Shot entirely on location at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, Festival in Cannes probes the
irresistible beauty of Cannes - the crystalline sandy beaches, the azure skies, the amazing
cinematic talent and constant parade of outrageously attractive stars and models - as well as
its flipside - the underhanded schemes, the out-and-out lies, the back-biting, the phoniness,
the greed and the obsession with money and youth over art and richness of experience. But
most of all, Jaglom delves into the nature of romance at Cannes. For here, where everything
else is a commodity, romance strips men and women to their barest emotions.

Among the attendees of Festival in Cannes are: Millie Marquand (ANOUK AIMÉE), a
gorgeous but aging screen icon who must choose between a cameo in a blockbuster or a
fantastic woman's role in a low-budget indie; her husband Viktor (MAXIMILIAN
SCHELL), an unfaithful legendary film director who nevertheless is still terribly attracted to
his wife; Alice Palmer (GRETA SCACCHI) a successful actress who has dared to write an
"uncommercial" screenplay in which she hopes to direct Millie; Rick Yorkin (RON
SILVER), a manipulative and powerful Hollywood producer who thinks he knows exactly
what everyone else wants; Blue (JENNY GABRIELLE) a fresh-faced ingénue who is about to become the next hot sensation, willing or not; and Kaz (ZACK NORMAN) a hyperactive
entrepreneur whose main skill is pretending to be somebody else.

Together, they will become lovers, business partners, friends and enemies as each attempts to
come away from Cannes happy and fulfilled, or at least some semblance thereof. Alex Craig
Mann and Camilla Campanale also appear in noteworthy screen debuts and newcomers Kim
Kolarich and Rachel Bailit add their energies. Among those appearing as themselves are
Faye Dunaway, William Shatner and Peter Bogdanovich. Festival in Cannes is written and
directed by Henry Jaglom and produced by John Goldstone and Judith Wolinsky.
