The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press has urged California Governor Gray Davis to sign into law a bill that would give reporters greater access to prisoners.

Responding to the governor's past statements expressing concern that the measure could be disruptive, the group said, "Journalists had access to prisoners for decades without incident before former Governor Pete Wilson's corrections department banned media interviews in 1995.
