Britain's "Smut Channel" Wants To Change Image

Britain's commercial Channel 5, rapped repeatedly by watchdog agencies for its schedule of soft-porn films late at night and bawdy game shows in primetime, has indicated that it plans to alter its image.

Today's (Thursday) London Times reported that the channel is planning to "invest in serious drama and factual programs before its image begins to drive away advertisers."

The newspaper quoted one Channel 5 exec as saying, "Only 2 percent of what we air is smutty. But the public perception is that it amounts to 90 percent."
