Congress May Probe TV Election Bungle

The television networks' rush to judgment during their election coverage Tuesday night may wind up being scrutinized by Congress.

Representative Billy Tauzin, the Louisiana Republican who heads the House Telecommunications Subcommittee, said Thursday that the panel has sent a letter to the heads of the major TV networks asking them to explain "what went wrong." In particular, he said the Voter News Service, which released the original exit-poll data calling the Florida vote for Gore, should "come under some close scrutiny and review." VNS is a consortium owned by all of the major networks and other news organizations.
