New York Times Planning A Nightly Newscast

The New York Times is in talks with producers of PBS's NewsHour with Jim Lehrer to create a nightly news program for public broadcasting stations to be called National Edition, the New York Observer reported Wednesday.

In reporting on the development Observer writer Gabriel Snyder commented: "The goal is to produce a smart but hip evening news program, one that would offer an up-market, Times-ian alternative to the shrill blood 'n' guts found on local TV." The article went on to note that such a newscast "would represent The Times' most significant entry into television."

Just hours earlier, the newspaper confirmed that it will help produce a monthly newsmagazine program for the about-to-be-launched National Geographic Channel.
