CNN is expected to announce as early as next week that it will cut 500 to 1,000 positions affecting its 4,000-person staff, most of them at CNN's interactive operations, the Wall Street Journal reported today (Thursday).

The newspaper said that the elimination of positions did not necessarily mean the elimination of jobs -- pointing out that some would be removed through attrition and reorganization. The move is expected to result in CNN on-air correspondents filing more reports for CNN's online operations.
