Hannibal Director Impresses By Versatile Julianne

The hunt for JODIE FOSTER's replacement in the sequel to SILENCE OF THE LAMBS led to a bitter behind-the-scenes battle.

Actress JULIANNE MOORE is reported to have beaten WINONA RYDER and JENNIFER JASON LEIGH to the role of FBI agent CLARICE STARLING in HANNIBAL, which also stars SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS. Director RIDLEY SCOTT says he favoured Julianne after much thought because she can be a true chameleon.

He explains, "She can be completely off the wall and unstable, as she was in MAGNOLIA, an unpleasant vamp as she was in the period piece AN IDEAL HUSBAND, and then a porno star in BOOGIE NIGHTS. "She has this uncanny subtlety so she can wear so many different faces when the mood takes her." (RGS/WNWCAN/PDD)
