Gypsy Writer Rains On Brooks' Parade

Following protests by Arthur Laurents and other principals involved in the original production of the musical Gypsy, Mel Brooks has removed a brief parody of a song from the show from his own stage version of The Producers, the New York Post reported today (Wednesday). One source told the Post that the parody "infuriated" Laurents, who felt that it "would hurt the original song and Gypsy in the future." Preview productions of the new musical, which is based on Brooks' 1968 movie, have been attracting sell-out crowds in Chicago, the Post reported. Advance sales in New York have already hit $7 million.
