Pythons Fail To Amuse

MONTY PYTHON stars TERRY JONES and TERRY GILLIAM are haunted by memories of the first showing of MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL (1975) - because no-one laughed.

The two funnymen and members of the cult British comedy team enjoyed every minute spent promoting the re-release of the hit 1975 movie this weekend (16-17JUN01), but had rather less pleasant experiences the first time round.

Recalling the debut showing of the release to investors, Jones shudders, "Oh, they laughed right at the beginning, then they stopped. .. . From then on, nothing. Nobody laughed the whole way through. "

And preview screenings in England went so badly that, before showing the film at a Los Angeles film festival, the team actually considered editing out a scene in which a character asks the audience whether they were enjoying themselves.

Jones says the members of the group thought they were "just asking for trouble" with that scene. Nevertheless, he adds, that scene "got the biggest laugh of the evening" - and the movie eventually sent the investors laughing all the way to the bank. (KW/WNWCHR/KMW)
