India Cancels Film Festival

The International Film Festival of India has been cancelled due to fear of possible American strikes on nearby Afghanistan. The October 10-20 (01) festival was due to be held in Bangalore.

An Indian government statement said festival organisers were uncertain "of the extent of international participation in the festival on account of the emerging situation in the region". The festival was due to include the national debut of MONSOON WEDDING (2001), Indian director MIRA NAIR's comedy about the clash of tradition and modernity.

The film took the GOLDEN LION AWARD for best film at the VENICE FILM FESTIVAL earlier this month (SEP01). (KMW/WNWCNCA/RP)
