KATE WINSLET and EWAN MCGREGOR have been named Britain's top acting talents for a record fourth time by moviegoers at the Empire Film Awards. The pair have been named best British actress and actor for more than half of the seven years that the magazine has been running its readers' poll. Winslet, 26, took the title for wartime drama ENIGMA (2001) while 30- year-old McGregor landed his prize for MOULIN ROUGE (2001) - one of three prizes awarded to the lavish musical.
Another triple winner was LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (2001), which claimed the top film of 2001 gong, best actor for ELIJAH WOOD's role as Frodo Baggins and best debut for ORLANDO BLOOM's debut as Legolas. Another of the movie's stars, CHRISTOPHER LEE, who plays Saruman The White, was given a special achievement prize for his decades in film, just days after receiving a similar prize at the Evening Standing Film Awards. NICOLE KIDMAN, meanwhile, took the prize for best actress for her role as sexy courtesan Satine in Moulin Rouge (2001).
The film also picked up the best director prize for film-maker Baz Luhrmann. Box office hit BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY (2001) was named best British film. The Empires are the only major British movie awards voted for by moviegoers themselves.
