Madonna said she found it difficult performing love scenes with another man in front of her husband Guy Ritchie.

The singer described how Ritchie stood a few feet away with a "very sharp stick" as he directed her rolling about on a beach with Adriano Giannini.



She said it was only her professionalism that got her through the ordeal for the remake of the film Swept Away (2002).

"The whole crew was waiting for Guy's head to explode off his body," she told the New York Times.

"We were all intimidated. We were all terrified. The whole thing was weird, because, after all, he's my husband and he's the only person I make love to."
Love scenes were always awkward because they force her to be intimate with a stranger, she added.

In the film, Madonna stars as Amber, a rich American shipwrecked on a deserted Mediterranean island with an Italian sailor.


Giannini's father, Giancarlo, starred in the original Italian language 1974 version of the movie.

Ritchie said he had had concerns about the love scenes but had enjoyed directing his wife.

He also insisted she had not behaved as a diva on set.

But Madonna said she had some say in the casting of her on-screen lover, and if she had thought he was "gross", Ritchie would not have chosen him to play the role.
