Carrey says new film is letter to old girlfriends

Jim Carrey says his new film is a love letter to his ex-girlfriends.

In Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind Carrey plays Joel Barish, a heartbroken lover desperate to forget his ex-girlfriend Clementine, played by Kate Winslet.

When he finds out Clementine has undergone a new scientific process to erase him completely from her memory, he decides to do the same.

But Joel learns although you can erase someone from your mind - getting them out of your heart is a lot more tricky. For Carrey, 42, the movie is a reminder that his own love life has been far from happy.

He admits that, like Joel, he is often racked by memories of his own heartbreak and says of his new movie: "It ended up being a love letter to everyone I've loved," he said.

He added: "I knew I would have to open old wounds with this film. I knew I'd have to sit there and pick at scabs because I've had my share of failed relationships."

Among those are two wives, with whom he endured bitter break-ups, and a famous fiancée - Oscar-winner Renee Zellweger, says The Sun.

Since they split in 2000 there have been many beautiful women in his life, including Danish model Betina Holte and a Russian ballerina, but no lasting love.

"In my time I've done the erasing and I've been erased and it's never a pleasant feeling. Everybody has someone they'd rather erase.

"
Everybody identifies with that - having had some relationship that hurts so bad they just wish they could make the ghost go away. But I would never want a person erased completely from my memory."
