Avril Lavigne to sing SpongeBob SquarePants theme song

Avril Lavigne is to sing the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song on the soundtrack for the children's animated film.

She heads a list of 'alternative' artists selected by Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of the Nickelodeon series, for the soundtrack.

Avril's contribution, featuring the chorus: "Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob SquarePants!", is said to be something of a musical departure.

The soundtrack will also feature contributions from the Flaming Lips, Wilco, The Shins, Ween and Motorhead.

Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne says he enjoyed making his band's song, SpongeBob and Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy, which is to be released as a single.

"I actually suggested that maybe I could try to get Justin Timberlake to do a duet with us, as an off-the-cuff idea," Coyne said.

"But Hillenburg said: "I don't want any of those sort of commercial weirdos on there. I don't like those commercial people. I like you guys, and Wilco and Ween.

"Hillenburg wanted people who liked SpongeBob, who felt some kinship with the characters, and the absurdness and surreal-ness of it, and I truly think the show is clever and funny and sick."
