Transformers has made box office history in the US.

The robot movie smashed the record for the highest takings on the July 4 holiday with an $29.1 million.

The previous best was $22 million for Spider-Man 2 in 2004, reports Variety.com.

Transformers has so far generated $65.7 million in the US in its opening week.

The new Pixar animation Ratatouille also did well on Independence Day with an estimated $10.2 million

Transformers is out in the UK on July 27, with Ratatouille following on October 5.
