Daniel Craig lands 'Dragon Tattoo' role

Daniel Craig has reportedly closed a deal to star in the US version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Craig will play journalist Mikael Blomkvist in David Fincher’s adaptation of hit Swedish thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And according to Deadline, he hasn’t just locked in a deal for the first movie – he’s got options for the sequels, which should they happen, will be based on follow-up books The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets’ Nest.

Craig will play Mikael Blomkvist who fancies himself as an amateur detective and is immersed in crime writing culture. He attempts to solve a complex case involving the mysterious disappearance of a 16 year old some 40 years ago. The character is written for someone in their 40's, and Craig clearly has that Nordic look (blonde, blue eyes) and feels more right for the movie than Fincher’s usual cohort Brad Pitt, who was once rumored for the movie.

Director David Fincher and producer Scott Rudin are reportedly still in the process of casting the role of Lisbeth Salander. Actresses including Ellen Page, Mia Wasikowska, Emily Browning, Sara Snook, Rooney Mara and Sophie Lowe are in the running for the part.

It’ll mean the start of a busy period for Daniel Craig, who right now is busy riding horses and battling nasty space invaders in Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens. The minute he finishes that, he’ll be whipped off to Sweden to start work on Dragon Tattoo.
