Johansson replaces Morton in Her.

Scarlett Johansson has taken over Samantha Morton's role in Her, director Spike Jonze has revealed.

The filmmaker praised Samantha, who had already filmed her part as the voice of an operating system in the drama, but admitted that he only realised it wouldn't work when the movie was in post production.

"I think, unfortunately, it's pretty normal in terms of my not-quite-painless-for-everyone-involved 'process' of discovering what the movie is," he wrote in a statement to Vulture.

"Samantha was with us on set and was amazing. It was only in post production, when we started editing, that we realised that what the character/movie needed was different from what Samantha and I had created together. So we recast and since then Scarlett has taken over that role."

Spike added: "I love Samantha. I've been friends with her forever and I hope we make lots of things together in the future. Be well, Spike."

The sci-fi film stars Joaquin Phoenix as a lonely writer, who develops romantic feelings for his new operating system.

Olivia Wilde, Rooney Mara and Amy Adams also feature in the movie, which is expected to be released later this year.
