Star Wars Spin-Off Made By Godzilla Director.

The British director of the new Godzilla blockbuster is to make a spin-off Star Wars movie.

Gareth Edwards has said he was "excited" and "honoured" to be at the helm for the new flick which is due out on December 16, 2016.

It is not known what the unnamed spin-off will be about but there is speculation it could focus on characters such as bounty hunter Boba Fett and Jedi master Yoda.

The Hollywood Reporter claimed there were also rumours of a potential Han Solo origin story or untold adventures of Luke Skywalker.

Edwards was behind the 2010 movie Monsters - which he wrote, directed and was also a cinematographer and visual effects artist on.

In a statement on the Star Wars website, he said: "Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life -- join the Rebel Alliance!"

"I could not be more excited and honoured to go on this mission with Lucasfilm."

The 3D reboot of Godzilla recently topped the UK box office in its opening weekend, taking £6.4m.

Meanwhile, filming has already got under way on the first of three new Star Wars films made by Lucasfilm and Disney.

Episode VII, due out on December 18, 2015, will feature a host of young actors as well as Harrison Ford (Solo) , Mark Hamill (Skywalker) and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) from the original movies in the 1970s and 1980s.
