Biography

English born costume designer JOANNA JOHNSTON has collaborated seven times with Robert Zemeckis, on Who Framed Roger Rabbit (with Johnston designing costumes for both live-action and animated characters), Back to the Future 2 and Back to the Future 3, Death Becomes Her, Forrest Gump and Contact.

Johnston has also worked extensively with Steven Spielberg, on Saving Private Ryan., Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (with Anthony Powell) and The Color Purple, for which she designed special wardrobe for the Kenya unit.

Johnston was the costume designer for Unbreakable starring Bruce Willis and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, with whom she previously collaborated on the Oscar-nominated The Sixth Sense.

Other film credits include French Kiss, Far and Away and Hellraiser.

Johnston began her film career as an assistant to costume designer Anthony Powell, working on his Oscar-winning designs for Death on the Nile and Tess, as well as Evil Under the Sun and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. She went on to work with designer Tom Rand on the films The French Lieutenant’s Woman, The Pirates of Penzance and The Shooting Party.
