McAlpine first came to worldwide attention with the acclaimed Australian features MY BRILLIANT CAREER (1979) by Gillian Armstrong and BREAKER MORANT (1980) for Bruce Beresford, both of which collected Australian Film Institute Awards for Best Cinematography.
