Monster Hunter (2020) DVD
MONSTER HUNTER takes the characters into a new world, an unknown environment home to enormous and terrifying monsters. Grappled by danger, they must find a way to escape with help from a mysterious hunter.

Behind our world, there is another: a world of dangerous and powerful monsters that rule their domain with deadly ferocity. When an unexpected sandstorm transports Captain Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her unit (T.I. Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta) to a new world, the soldiers are shocked to discover that this hostile environment is home to enormous and terrifying monsters. In their desperate battle for survival, the unit encounters the mysterious Hunter (Tony Jaa), whose unique skills allow him to stay one step ahead of the powerful creatures. As Artemis and Hunter slowly build trust, she discovers that he is part of a team led by the Admiral (Ron Perlman). Facing a danger so great it could threaten to destroy their world, the brave warriors combine their unique abilities to band together for the ultimate showdown.

Milla Jovovich has been starring in these sorts of movies for what seems like decades now and she never disappoints. She always gives it 110%. She is one of the most committed actresses in the movie business. She is a good actress. But more importantly for these films she is a fantastic action star. She does a lot of her own stunts and she is very physically capable. So you know that a lot of the time when you are seeing Milla on the screen it really is her... so long as the director and the insurance people will allow it Milla will do it! She is seriously impressive.

I'll admit to having never played the Monster Hunter game so I came to this film with no knowledge of the concept of what this film was about. Well... no need to worry... it's about hunting monsters! So you won't need to have played to game to enjoy this movie.

Support comes from Tony Jaa (Fast & Furious 7,xXx: Return of Xander Cage), Tip "T.I." Harris (Ant-Man), Meagan Good (The Intruder), Diego Boneta (Terminator: Dark Fate), Josh Helman (Mad Max: Fury Road), Jin Au-Yeung (2 Fast, 2 Furious) and Ron Perlman (Hellboy).

There is no better director than Paul W.S. Anderson where this sort of action is involved. His work on the Resident Evil films is testimony to that. As the director of Monster Hunter he shows us that he is assured and confident when it comes to fantasy and action based cinema. The film is slick, well crafted, expertly edited and really impresses in the action scenes and the fight sequences. His close relationship with Jovovich (well... if you didn't already know it... they are married!) and their mutual understanding of each other and respect for one another is obvious and I think it comes across on screen that they are able to work together with fluency and ease getting the best from one another and also leading the entire production. The supporting cast certainly seem to have taken encouragement from them and produce good performances all round.

The film starts off with a crazy sequence that will have audiences shouting the likes of 'hell yeah!' and whilst it does tend to make less sense as it goes on I think fans will forgive lack of plotting for unbridled action and excitement.

It may have underperformed at the box office only making back $44m of its $60m budget but I think it will find a very appreciative audience on home release and I expect there will be a sequel.
