HOUSE OF GUCCI is inspired by the shocking true story of the family behind the Italian fashion empire. When Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga), an outsider from humble beginnings, marries into the Gucci family, her unbridled ambition begins to unravel the family legacy and triggers a reckless spiral of betrayal, decadence, revenge, and ultimately…murder.

House of Gucci (2021) - Movie Poster
There is much Oscar talk around this movie, thanks to the cast and the sometimes brilliant, occasionally over the top, but always entertaining performances. Lady Gaga is the stand out here, with Jarrod Leto’s antics a close second. But the difference is stark. Whilst Leto is wearing crazy costumes, a hairpiece and affecting a rather odd manner throughout the film, Lady Gaga appears to be in a different movie, unaware that the others are apparently playing it over-the-top, she plays it straight and produces a fine performance that makes the film more watchable than it ever would have been without her. Credit goes to her for holding the film together. A second Oscar may well be heading to her mantlepiece. Of course the film is packed with Oscar winners and nominees, including both Gaga and Leto - both for superior films.

The two and a half hour plus run-time could have been trimmed, and the pacing tightened up, as at times the film drags, but this is perhaps what you get from an aging, showy, director no doubt looking to make a sensation of one of the latter films in his career. It is by turns astonishing, poignant, tacky, unintentionally funny, and occasionally baffling. But how often do you get this array of talent in the same film? Pacino, Driver, Gaga, Leto, Irons, Hayek - it’s a feast of genuine movie stars.

This one is going to split the audience right down the middle, some will love it, others will hate it. You’re going to have to watch it to find out which.
