Jordan Peele - writer-director of Get Out and Us - gives us his third offering in Nope and despite being completely different it's equally brilliant as his debut and sophomore efforts.

Horse wrangler Otis "OJ" Haywood Jr. played to perfection by Daniel Kaluuya and his sister Emerald played equally impressively by Keke Palmer. The pair are haunted by a UFO that is quietly terrorising his California ranch. Their father Otis Sr (Keith David) falls foul of the airbourne monster in an early scene leaving the siblings to fight off the threat alone.

Nope (2022) - DVD
Former child star Ricky "Jupe" Park (Steven Yeun) runs a nearby theme park and the brother and sister may be forced to sell up to him in a sub plot, this might be the less exciting part of the film, but as I'll mention later, is does examine some interesting issues.

There are echoes of classic films from the likes of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and The Happening to Tremors and Jaws. That said its completely different to those films and it is fiercely original - as is all of Peele's work.

Daniel Kaluuya conveys a sense of grief over his Father's death as well as a lack of purpose with very few words. His performance is beautifully nuanced. He's quiet and reserved whilst his sister is quite the opposite - she's a whirlwind of passion, exuberance and showmanship.

Ultimately they use their unique skills and abilities to save each other. Their relationship is close and they act together very convincingly - the like of which has not been seen since siblings Darry and Trish Jenner played by Justin Long and Gina Philips in Jeepers Creepers.

The pacing of the film will not suit everyone, and it is much slower than Peele’s previous films, but I loved it. It gives the audience time to really get to know the characters properly. The film also explores many different themes in detail such as the challenges we face from being a child to being an adult. And what happens to children who work in show business and how this affects them in adult life.

Nope is a thoughtful movie that is cleverly written and carefully directed featuring smart acting from Kaluuya and Palmer in the central roles. It continues a fantastic run of form for Peele who can seemingly do no wrong on the big screen. I highly recommend NOPE which looks stunning in 4k and I eagerly await his next offering which I have no doubt will once again be fresh and unique.

NOPE will be available to download and keep from October 28th, and on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD from November 14th.
