A Quiet Place: Day One expands the franchise’s groundbreaking universe, taking fans back to the first day of the invasion by deadly creatures who hunt by sound in one of the loudest places on Earth: New York City. Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn give emotional and riveting performances as strangers who embark on a harrowing journey through the eerily quiet streets of Manhattan.

A Quiet Place: Day One
As this is an origin story I would have liked to have seen the way the aliens came to Earth. All we see is falling debris. And then the attack begins. We could have seen where the aliens came from, why they came, and what their reasoning. Just how intelligent are they? Can they be reasoned with, or are they just aggressive creatures? Can they communicate? Are they coming to Earth to conquer us? To terraform the Earth? Are they simply here by accident? All of these questions are frustratingly left unanswered in favour of what is basically a monster chase movie.

Thankfully Nyong’o is an incredible actor who makes the movie compelling viewing from start to finish. She's almost feral in her movements. Her performance demands that you watch every moment, every breath, every word, action and body movement. She becomes her most primal self. Both as the character and as an actor. She's brilliant. Her character Samira is suffering from an illness, she is living at a hospice, we don’t know what the illness is, but we do know that it is terminal. Is she fearless because she's already dying? We meet her character at a hospice somewhere just outside the city of Manhattan. She goes into the city to watch a marionette show and to get pizza. But then the creatures attack and the world as we know it ends.

It's really a film about the final days of the character's life but it's not about her being killed by the creatures like everyone else. And if it's a story that didn't really need to be told, and it doesn't really have any major points of differentiation from the other two movies, it's still a stylish piece of film making that says more about terminal illness and living life even in the face of death than it does about monsters. How do you feel about the world coming to an end, when you're already dying?

The set design is excellent, immersing us into the story effortlessly. A studio backlot has been used for the outdoor scenes. Scenes of a largely deserted New York. It feels like 9/11 which is what John Kraskinski says gave him some inspiration for these scenes. The streets are littered with the twisted metal of cars and the rubble of buildings consumed by fire. Blood smeared walls, debris strewn across streets, fires everywhere, flickering lights, abandoned vehicles and rats. There are lots of practical effects, mixed with visual effects using CGI. They are mixed really well to make everything seamless.

But it’s the story and Nyong’o’s performance that will keep you watching. At it's most basic level this is a story about a woman going to get pizza set to the backdrop of the end of the world brought about by nameless alien creatures invading the Earth for reasons unknown. But it is a little more than that, and in fact if you watch closely enough until the end you'll see it's also a story of the journey of, and fate of, a yellow cardigan. And a cat.
