Shaun of the Dead : The Shoot

Filming began in May 2003 for nine weeks - five on location and four at Ealing Studios.
It was a challenging shoot. The story is set over two days so light and weather conditions needed to remain consistent, an almost impossible requirement on location in the UK. Night shooting in tricky locations during the summer with only a few hours of darkness also proved to be a real test.

The sight of hordes of zombies in residential London areas from Crouch End in North London to Millwall in South London caused a huge amount of interest. From some locals, there were complaints about the effect on their children of seeing ghoulish zombies. Mostly, however, people enjoyed the spectacle with residents joining in as zombies on several occasions.

At Ealing Studios in West London, production designer Marcus Rowland and his team brought to life the interior of the Winchester Pub, backdrop for the climatic zombie attack, and Shaun’s Flat, where Shaun and Ed first realize something odd is going on.
