Series 5 Synopsis

At the end of season 4, Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) was forced to fake his own death with the help of four close accomplices in order to evade prosecution from the Chinese government for an undercover attack on their embassy. Having escaped undetected, Jack embarked on a new life as a new man, with his family and friends left behind believing he was dead. But, 18 months later, all of the people who knew of Jack’s continuing existence begin to be brutally targeted by assassins. Jack is forced to come out of hiding and return to Los Angeles to face his enemies who have found out about the deception and seek to find him at any cost and won’t stop at anything, including murder!

US soil is under threat from terrorists once again as a plot to release fatal nerve gas and kill millions is uncovered and Jack is thrust back into the workings of CTU. President Charles Logan (Gregory Itzin) is running the nation and working towards an arms treaty with Russia – but will the terrorists who seek to harm the people of his country be able to convince the President otherwise? With his seemingly unstable wife Martha (Jean Smart) by his side, President Logan is in for a rough day as the cruel twists and turns of the terrorist plot become apparent and CTU is tested to its absolute limits.

With continued support from faithful fellow agents Curtis Manning (Roger Cross), Chloe O’Brian (Mary-Lynn Rajskub) and Edgar Stiles (Louis Lombardi), Jack faces tough opposition from CTU Division and Home Land Security who have taken over the offices of CTU during the crisis. Lynn McGill (Sean Austin) has arrived from Division and commandeered Bill Buchanan’s (James Morrison) position as Director, and when Karen Hayes from Home Land Security arrives to take over command of CTU after a devastating attack on the unit, Jack and his allies become sidelined and their positions compromised.
