Final Destination

Back in 2000, when we were still rather unfamiliar with Final Destination’s devilish concept that death can literally come at any point, there was one scene which truly took our breath away. During a rather inane argument, one of the characters steps out into the street and before she can finish a rant, a bus slams right into her, covering the characters in blood and us, the audience, in Pepsi.

Deep Blue Sea

It’s a given that when you’re watching a movie where a group of people get killed off one-by-one you’re usually safe in expecting the biggest star of them all to survive until the end. In 1999, this rule was well and truly smashed with the gobsmacking moment where Samuel L Jackson’s stirring speech got brutally shortened by a hungry shark. From then on, all bets were off…

Drag Me to Hell (2009) - Movie PosterCarrie

It’s a trick that has been endlessly employed ever since. But in 1976, Carrie was at the front of the crowd. All of the mayhem has died down. We’re watching a soft sequence of the guilt-ridden Sue Snell approaching Carrie’s makeshift grave, with flowers to pay her respects. As she tearfully places them down, Carrie’s bloodied hands suddenly rise from the dead to grab her. BUT it’s all a dream! Check out Friday the 13th, 4 years later, for a blatant rip-off.

The Descent

One of the most relentlessly jumpy films of the past decade, it’s hard to single out just one moment. But the scene which probably caused the most seat upheavals took place just as the group found themselves in the crawlers den for the first time. Unable to see what was around them, the night vision button on their camera became a handy special feature. Scanning the group, we suddenly see a creature at the end of the line-up. Cue carnage and a very scared cinema.

REC

The final 20 minutes of REC are quite simply, terrifying. As the virus spreads around the quarantined apartment block, we are left with just our heroine and her trusty cameraman, whose view has been ours for the whole movie. They find themselves surrounded and residing in the penthouse apartment. Our cameraman decides to check whether it’s safe in the attic above. As a zombified boy leaps out toward us, we’re quite sure that it really isn’t…

The Thing

Released back in 1982, The Thing boasted ground-breaking, heart-stopping special effects that still hold up to this day. Effects that were best highlighted by a seat-ejecting scene involving a nasty surprise for one of the characters. After one of the men seemingly dies of a heart attack, the doctor starts to give him CPR. As he pumps up and down on his chest, it suddenly opens up, revealing him as an alien and biting off the doctor’s hands. A cautionary reminder to never try and resuscitate a possible extra-terrestrial.

Seven

A film full of nasty shocks, there was one which stuck out as a proper leap out of your seat and embarrass yourself in front of your friends sort of moment. As the detectives are investigating the apartment of yet another victim, they find him strapped to his bed, starved, horribly gaunt and dead. Well at least they think he’s dead…

The Orphanage

Kids are always a reliably creepy source of creepiness. Without them, 99% of modern horror films would be lost. But the biggest shock in The Orphanage came from a little old woman and a speedy ambulance. In a Final Destination style sequence, we see said woman get knocked down which is shocking enough but the real jump comes soon after. Assuming she is dead, our heroine reaches over, only to be grabbed and given a nasty look at her half-destroyed face.

The Blair Witch Project

A film which caused a great deal of audience members to walk out a little pale-faced, there was one moment which sticks out as the real seat-ejector. Scared and alone in the middle of the woods, the traumatised crew are filming some potentially suspicious noises at night. But it’s only when something hits the side of their tent that they know something is out there. Any future camping trips we had booked were hereby indefinitely cancelled…

The Omen

A scene which proved a wicked pre-cursor to the Final Destination series occurred all the way back in 1976. Despite being aware that something devilish was after them, our hero and his helpful cameraman are unaware of a violent chain of events that are taking place around them. We too are unsure of what exactly is going on. It’s only when a sheet of plate glass arrives directly at the cameraman’s neck, severing the link to his body that we are fully aware of the stakes. I bet there were long lines at church the following Sunday…
