Adam : Top 10 Unlikeliest Screen Couples

Romance is never easy, especially if you're a character in a movie. Things always seem to get in the way, whether it's a family dispute, an impending meteorite attack or a fast-approaching iceberg, the path to true love is uncomfortably rocky. Despite all this, there are some couples who manage to forge a bond in a rather unconventional manner. Such is the case in the new romantic drama Adam (2009), released on August 7th. Hugh Dancy and Rose Byrne may live next door but communication is never easy. To celebrate the release, we've put together a list of the ten unlikeliest couples in film:

Knocked Up
Now, love can be blind. Especially if you’re blind drunk at the time. This is what happens to Katherine Heigl in Knocked Up and it leads her to a one-night stand with Seth Rogen, who is, ahem, punching above his weight, to say the least. It should have ended there but 6 weeks down the line, a surprise pregnancy forces them to make the most of the faint connection they share. Most surprisingly, it actually turns out rather well and becomes an alarmingly positive advertisement for drinking.

Punch-Drunk Love
In a rare serious role, Adam Sandler plays the socially awkward, blue-suit wearing Barry Egan who spends most of his time being continually bullied by his seven sisters. Into his life walks Emily Watson, a mysterious and charming woman who is intrigued by Barry and his manner. An unusual courtship begins as Barry tries to overcome his neuroses in order for him to fall in love for the first time.

Harold and Maude
Age can be an issue for some. If you’re in a different place in life than your partner it can affect what it is you really want to get out of your relationship. For Harold and Maude, it was more pronounced than most. Harold is a 20-year-old guy, obsessed with death and spending most of his time at funerals. He meets Maude, a 79-year old pensioner, and an unlikely connection is forged. While he is turned off by all of the women his age that his mother keeps pushing him towards, he falls deeper for Maude. But as she turns 80, she has a tragic surprise in-store…

Splash
It’s not that abnormal to have a crush on a mermaid. Anyone who has seen The Little Mermaid will attest to that. But to actually pursue a relationship with one is something else. Tom Hanks ignored the obvious problems raised and fell for Daryl Hannah’s admittedly rather hot half-fish back in 1984. Things in the real world don’t quite work out for them so by the end of the film he jumps into the sea and they live happily ever after. Now that’s what you call a compromise.

The Lake House
For anyone who’s ever endured a long-distance relationship, The Lake House will strike a chord. For one, it will make you feel damn lucky. Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves aren’t separated by space but rather time. Two years in fact. They exchange love letters via a magical postbox and yearn for the other, as you would. All of this without knowing what the other looked like. You can almost feel the looks of relief as they finally meet and discover they’re both rather hot.

City of Angels
Now, if you had to think of an actor or actress who best embodied your idea of what an angel would look like, who would you go for? I can guarantee that it probably wouldn’t be Nicolas Cage, who starred as a heavenly being in the 1998 drama City of Angels. He made the ultimate error by falling in love with a pesky human, played by Meg Ryan. Dating an angel proved to be tough so he makes the biggest sacrifice there is and becomes human. But as one falls from heaven, another is only on their way…

King Kong
We’ve all woken up next to a real beast before. Whether it’s too many facial piercings or a nose that seems to go on forever, it’s not a great feeling. For Naomi Watts in 2005’s King Kong reboot, this feeling is amplified when she wakes up next to a 50-foot tall actual best. Despite the obvious differences, a surprisingly sweet romance develops but one which is destined to never last.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Jim Carrey isn’t known for his quiet moments but Eternal Sunshine provided him with numerous moments to sit back and keep himself to himself. In fact, it’s Kate Winslet who plays the live wire that he falls for as he tries to become more open to new things, especially dating someone with blue hair. Even as he tries to have the thought of her removed from his head by specialists, love manages to ‘shine’ through.

WALL-E
In this day and age, it’s incredibly hard to create a romance that people can actually believe in. It’s especially hard if the romance is animated and it’s between two robots. WALL-E is a scrappy, quirky waste removal unit who spends his nights dreaming of something more. One day, something more arrives in the shape of Eve, a shiny, slick robot from the sky and against all odds, they fall for each other. By the finale, anyone who isn’t crying like a new-born baby is most likely made of metal.

Lars and the Real Girl
Guy falls in love with blow-up doll. Even though the plot of Lars and the Real Girl sounds rather creepy, Ryan Gosling’s love affair with ‘Bianca’ is incredibly sweet-natured and totally innocent. But try telling that to those around him. It’s a rocky road for the two of them as Lars slowly convinces his family and neighbours that Bianca isn’t as ‘plastic’ as she seems…
