Star Wars: Clone Wars: Volume 2, Season 2 DVDSo you’ve seen Star Wars 1-6 on DVD and TV hundreds of time and you’re looking forward to the Blu-ray versions released later this year, but what can you do to satisfy that Star Wars itch in the meantime? Well there is a huge expanded universe of comics, novels and games but if you’re looking for the sitting at home on the sofa sort of stuff why not try the tie-in cartoons, or animation as people now like to refer to them as?

I’ve not seen any Star Wars animation my self but I thought it’d be interesting to watch. Here I am starting at Season II, Volume II of The Clone Wars on DVD. So I’m not sure what has happened in the story so far but here in Season II, Volume II we have some nice battle sequences and spaceships with Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker heading up the action.

There is a really tasty battle on the on Coruscant, a planet originally called Notron, also known as Imperial Center or the Queen of the Core, located in the galactic Core, between Jedis and Lord Palpatine and a bunch of Magna Guards (General Grievous' bodyguard droids and General Grievous (remember him with the funky light sabres from Episode III? Cool.

That said, it was easy to enjoy the battle sequences, but not so easy to follow the story or understand the whole backstory, having not seen the first volume or the first season. I recommend watching this only after the first volume and the first season, but of course readers, you no doubt will have done, not like me who was a bit silly and thought that starting at Season II, Volume II might be a good idea. What was I thinking?

The colours and animation was very nicely rendered and the voice work was also good. The DVD extra features include a commentary track, a featurette and stills galleries. Not particularly impressive but it’s not a feature film so I guess you can’t expect a massive amount of extras.

Overall I think this sort of animation is mostly for the fanboys and the type of audience that is really into the whole mythos of Star Wars. Occasional Star Wars viewers such as myself and newcomers should probably start elsewhere… with the films for instance and maybe read some other Star Wars mythology before jumping into animated stuff that appears to be quite in depth – interesting though.
