Wealthy spinster/doormat "Charlotte," (a superb Bette Davis) is at the mercy of her overbearing-not to mention abusive-mother. Then, when her maternal tormentor finally dies, Charlotte inherits all of her mother's money, but none of her poise and self-esteme-that is until she begins working with psychiatrist Claude Rains-who helps transform this "ugly duckling" into a ravishing swan. But, will Charlotte choose to throw all her newfound confidence away once a very mysterious-and very unhappily married-man captures her heart?
