Sleuth (1972) - Synopsis

Andrew Wyke, a successful writer, invites his wife's lover into his british manor. The lover, called Milo Tindle, is a hairdresser of Italian origins. In spite of his foreign origins, he has reached social respectability and has his pride. Andrew Wyke, under a varnish of courtesy and politeness that hardly hides his contempt, plans to humiliate Milo Tindle by reminding him of his low origins. Great lovers of puzzles and enigmas, Wyke proposes a deal : Twindle will help him to simulate a burglary : Wyke will get the insurance money, and in return, he willingly allows Twindle to have his wife. Once Twindle has done his part of the deal, Wyke shows his superiority, threatening to kill him… he presses the trigger, and Milo falls down.

A few hours later, Inspector Doppler calls in, seeking Twindle… Wyke is humiliated in the same way and appears to be Twindle himself. It's his turn to lead the game…
