Robocop Returns Back On Track With New Director.

Abe Forsythe has been tapped to direct the upcoming Robocop Returns. The long-awaited project will be a sequel to the 1987 original RoboCop.

Neill Blomkamp spent years developing a follow-up that was set to act as a direct sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s classic 1987 original, but the Elysium director ultimately departed Robocop Returns, sending it right back to development.

Justin Rhodes, who wrote "Terminator: Dark Fate", penned the script for "Robocop Returns" with Forsythe rewriting. Neumeier and Miner will serve as producers.

An early description of RoboCop Returns reads, "anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption." While that was still the idea when Neill Blomkamp was on board, it will probably remain because it's just vague enough to work. Now that the project has a new director and is going through rewrites, it might be quite some time before the production ends up getting the cameras rolling.
