Jim Carrey's Godless Hollywood Experience

When he first arrived in Hollywood from Canada, funnyman JIM CARREY nearly turned round and fled home - because it was like hell on earth.

The LIAR LIAR star, now one of Tinseltown's most bankable stars, says his first memories of arriving in Los Angeles aged 19 are none too fond. "It was very traumatic." he recalls. "I spent the first night in a seedy motel on Sunset Boulevard. It was like an episode of BARETTA, people getting blow jobs in the parking lot, blank faces peeking out behind curtains."

Carrey recalls he happened to be reading a book called THE LATE GREAT PLANET EARTH that contained a biblical reference he wasn't familiar with and, as his room contained no bible, he went to ask the manager for one. He says, "I said, 'Excuse me sir, there's no Bible in my room.' "And the manager said, 'Son, there isn't an entire Bible in the whole of Hollywood." (LE/DT/JM)
