Soon, Videos Will Be Phoned In...

Hoping to bring "the depth of a video store in your home," Cincinnati-based Broadwing said Wednesday that it will begin testing a system next month that would eventually allow consumers to watch any movie at any time via a settop box hooked up to high-speed DSL telephone lines.

Today's (Thursday) Wall Street Journal said that the homes participating in the test will be serviced by Culver City, CA-based Intertainer Inc, which currently provides an on-demand service via cable.

... Or Will They Come Via The Internet?

Most members of the entertainment industry (52 percent) who specialize in high-technology applications believe that a "mainstream delivery application" will be developed within the next two years that will allow full-length movies to be presented over the Internet, according to an informal survey conducted by Showbiz Data, an online entertainment portal, in connection with the Film Information Technology Conference (FilmIT), which opens in Los Angeles today (Thursday). In addition, 53 percent of those participating in the survey indicated that they do not believe that the piracy issue can be "successfully addressed."
