Will Tony Winner Save The Tonys?

Seven-time Tony Award winner Elizabeth I. McCann is likely to become managing producer of the Tonys show, published reports said today (Friday).

The New York Post observed that part of her charge will be to "put a stoop to the intrigue, in-fighting and distrust that surround the theater's highest honor." The Post, citing unnamed industry insiders, said that McCann's first task will be to try to negotiate a truce between the feuding American Theater Wing and the League of American Theaters and Producers which jointly administer the Tonys.

Ratings for the awards ceremony reached an all-time low this year. One source told the newspaper that McCann plans to bring in playwrights like Neil Simon and Tom Stoppard to write the show, instead of TV writers.
