Sandra Oh Joins Robert Downey Jr. in HBO’s The Sympathizer Series.


Golden Globe winner Sandra Oh has officially signed on for a recurring role in HBO and A24’s upcoming series adaptation of The Sympathizer, which will be led by Robert Downey Jr.

Oh is among three new cast members of the upcoming series The Sympathizer. An adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel, the series co-stars and is produced by Robert Downey Jr., who will play multiple supporting roles. Downey Jr. even showed off his bald head that he will be sporting in the new series recently. The drama, thriller, and cross-culture satire centers on a communist spy in the Vietnam War’s final days. Due to the spying, he’s exiled from the U.S.

In addition to Oh, The Joy Luck Club alum Kieu Chinh and Paris by Night star Nguyen Cao Ky Duyên have also been cast to recur. Chinh will play the Major’s homesick mother while Ky Duyên will play the General’s elegant and commanding wife, Madame.

Director Park Chan-wook serves as co-showrunner of “The Sympathizer” with Don McKellar. They both executive produce alongside Downey, Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell on behalf of Team Downey; Kim Ly; Niv Finchman for Rhombus Media; Ron Schmidt; Nguyen; and Jisun Back on behalf of Moho Film. The series is a co-production between HBO, A24 and Rhombus Media in association with Cinetic Media and Moho Film. The project is currently in production, with filming taking place in Los Angeles and Thailand.
