Golden Globes: 'The Fabelmans' and 'The Banshees of Inisherin' Win Top Prizes.

The winners of the 80th Golden Globe Awards have been announced. The awards ceremony, which is typically viewed as a good predictor of what films will be receiving love at the Academy Awards, has returned to the air after not being televised in 2021.

The Fabelmans, directed by Steven Spielberg, took home the Golden Globe Award for Best Drama on Tuesday night, in addition to Spielberg's Golden Globe Award for Best Director.

The Fabelmans story follows a young boy who falls in love with the silver screen and begins to make his own films at home, enlisting the support of his family. The story is heavily inspired by legendary director Steven Spielberg's own childhood growing up in Arizona and going through his parents' divorce.

The cast includes Michelle Williams as the boy's mother and Paul Dano as his father. Gabriel LaBelle plays the role of Sammy Fabelman. LaBelle brought a young Spielberg to life, and according to Spielberg, "I gave Gabe a lot of access to home movies, family movies of myself and my parents. So he was really a member of the family by the time we shot the movie."

The Banshees of Inisherin nabbed the prize for best motion picture, musical or comedy.

"I can't believe it," director Martin McDonagh said from the podium. "It was an honor to be nominated against so many brilliant films this year, so many new friends."

Producer Graham Norton added from the stage, "We had a very happy time making this film in Ireland. Wonderful cast and crew there, thank you to them."

The movie, which led the film side with eight nominations heading into the ceremony, also won for best actor for Colin Farrell and best screenplay for McDonagh.

Elvis star Austin Butler picked up the award for best actor in a drama, expressing gratitude to Presley’s widow Priscilla Presley and daughter Lisa Marie Presley for their support of the project and his performance. He also thanked Denzel Washington for “championing me when you did not have to.” Washington personally recommended Butler, with whom he starred in a Broadway revival of The Iceman Cometh, to Elvis director Baz Luhrmann.

Cate Blanchett won best actress in a drama, her fourth career win, for her lead role in Tár. The actress did not attend the ceremony to collect the prize, but joined Ingrid Bergman, Jane Fonda and Meryl Streep as one of the four most-awarded drama actresses.
