British TV Watchdog Chides Top Soap

Britain's television watchdog, the Independent Television Commission, has chastised ITV's top-rated soap Coronation Street for including a scene last September that it described as "too intense" for a family show and potentially disturbing to children. The scene involved a struggle between two hospitalized men, in which one of the men dies in the midst of the struggle from his previous injuries. Granada, the ITV company that produces the show, argued that viewers who had followed the storyline were prepared for the scene and that it was more "menacing" than "violent."
