Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston will swap bodies in a new comedy from "Palm Springs" filmmaker Max Barbakow.
Amazon landed the film after a bidding war between several studios and streamers. Barbakow will write and direct the movie, which is backed by Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment.
The appetite for a two-hander star vehicle comes after the surprise box office success of Ticket to Paradise, the comedy that re-teamed Roberts with George Clooney. For Amazon’s Jennifer Salke and Head of Movies Julie Rapaport, this signals an uptick in Amazon stepping up to bolster its film slate.
One of the best-known body-swap comedies is Freaky Friday, which saw a mother and daughter having their minds swapped. Other takes on the idea have included other adults having their personalities transplanted into those of their children or other adolescents. Having Roberts and Aniston as the leads suggest a different type of movie, with two adults finding themselves in each other’s body and leaning more towards The Change-Up, which saw Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds having their bodies swapped with hilarious results.
Amazon’s upcoming movie slate includes the documentary "Judy Blume Forever" and Dave Franco’s rom-com "Somebody I Used to Know".
