Robert Downey Jr. Looking To Star In Vertigo Remake.

Robert Downey Jr is set to produce and potentially star in a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo with Steven Knight to pen the script.

The film is being produced by Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey through their Team Downey production banner, meaning the Marvel Cinematic Universe alum could end up both starring in and producing the remake.

Based on the 1954 novel D'entre les morts (From Among the Dead) by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac, Vertigo follows an ex-police officer (James Carter) with an intense fear of heights who is hired to prevent an old friend's wife from committing suicide. The psychological thriller received mixed reviews from critics when it was released in 1958, but Vertigo is now generally recognized as a classic Hitchcock film that offers unique insight into the director's own state of mind. The film also pioneered the now-ubiquitous dolly zoom, an in-camera effect that creates disorientation by distorting perspective.

Vertigo holds up today as a well-crafted classic and a highly influential film. A remake, even from an accomplished screenwriter and leading man like Knight and Downey Jr., is sure to cause controversy and raise legitimate questions about its necessity. The project seemingly has the support of the Hitchcock Estate, who favored the film's original studio Paramount as the landing spot for the Vertigo remake.

Downey will next be seen in the Christopher Nolan movie Oppenheimer.
