Matthew Lillard, who played Stuart 'Stu' Macher in the first 1996 Scream movie, is returning to the franchise for Scream 7.
Lillard seemingly celebrated the news with a cryptic Instagram video featuring one of the most iconic quotes from the original Scream: "My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me!"
Lillard previously cast doubt on returning to the franchise during a 2023 interview with EW. "I don’t think so. I don’t think so," the actor said when asked about playing Stu again. "I mean, look, with what they're going through right now, I have no idea where that goes. If there’s a world where it makes sense, then sure. I mean, they keep mentioning it, they keep tip-toeing around the outside."
How Stu will return for the new one isn’t so clear. The character was last seen having been stabbed multiple times and then had a large CRT TV slammed on his head, which electrocuted him.
The actor joins fellow legacy cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Foley alongside newcomers Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Joel McHale and Mark Consuelos.
Franchise creator Kevin Williamson is directing from a script by Guy Busick. James Vanderbilt, William Sherak and Paul Neinstein are producing.
