Judges at the European Film Awards in Paris snubbed the reported favorite, Billy Elliott, and picked Lars von Trier's Dancer in the Dark as the top film of the year Saturday night.
Singer Bjork also won the best actress award for her performance in the film. Dancer had won similar honors at Cannes last May. Sergi Lopez won the best actor award for his performance in Harry, He's Here to Help.
Meanwhile Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon won the 37th Golden Horse Awards in Taipei Saturday night, taking the Best Film award and five others. The film, which opens in limited release in the U.S. next weekend, is expected to be the first Asian film to become a major Oscar contender.
