New York Times Appoints A TV Chief

The New York Times on Monday appointed Michael Oreskes to head its television and Internet operations.

In a memo to the Times' staff, parts of which appear in today's (Tuesday) Washington Post, Executive Editor Joseph Lelyveld said that Oreskes' appointment to the newly created post of assistant managing editor for electronic news "sends a message about our seriousness of purpose."

The newspaper recently announced plans to produce a nightly national newscast that will be carried by PBS and a monthly news magazine that will air on the soon-to-be-launched National Geographic cable channel. The Post said that the Times may also expand its partnership with ABC under which it has already co-produced features for the network's magazine program, 20/20
