Oscar-Winning Casablanca Writer Dies


The man who scripted cult movie CASABLANCA, JULIUS J EPSTEIN, has died at the age of 91.

Epstein died on Saturday morning (30DEC00) at CEDARS-SINAI MEDICAL CENTRE in Los Angeles, America.

Casablanca, which Julius co-wrote with his twin brother PHILIP, won the 1943 ACADEMY AWARD for BEST SCREENPLAY, adapting the movie from an unproduced play called EVERYBODY COMES TO RICK'S. He also received Academy Awards nominations in 1972 for PETE 'N' TILLIE and in 1983 for his adaptation of the novel REUBEN, REUBEN, and received a nomination in 1938 for co-writing FOUR DAUGHTERS with LENORE COFFEE.

In 1998, Epstein was given a career achievement award by the LOS ANGELES FILM CRITICS ASSOCIATION.
