Roddy Inspired By John McCormack

THE COMMITMENTS writer RODDY DOYLE found the inspiration for his new movie WHEN BRENDAN MET TRUDY in an unusual place - an ancient song.

The award-winning writer hit on the idea while listening to a JOHN McCORMACK song called THREE IN THE MORNING. He says, "It was recorded in 1917 and had a crackle all over it from the old Victrola that sounded like rainfall. I slowly began to imagine a guy face down in the street in the rain at 3 o'clock in the morning. "When I settled down to write it became a much lighter, more cheerful story than I had first imagined."

The movie is riddled with references to classic films such as SUNSET BOULEVARD - in keeping with lead character Brendan's passion for old movies. (RXT/IST/CPT)
