Clooney Playfully Pokes Fun At Defeated Rivals

GEORGE CLOONEY dealt with his surprise at winning the Best Actor award at this year's (01) GOLDEN GLOBE awards - by poking fun at his defeated rivals.

The hunky OUT OF SIGHT star beat off competition from acting heavyweights ROBERT DE NIRO, JOHN CUSACK, JIM CARREY and MEL GIBSON with his leading performance in the COEN BROTHERS' O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?, and in his acceptance speech at Sunday's event (21JAN01)

Clooney resorted to comedic bravado to depreciate his achievement. He said, "You know I think when you list the names of the actors are in the category I'm in and, you gotta figure I'm gonna win this - Robert De Niro, Cusack, Carrey, Mel Gibson... What have they done!

But 'Gorgeous George' soon returned to the traditional humility expected at such events. He added, "
It actually was an honour to be nominated when you look at the guys, I think that John Cusack is one of the best actors I've ever seen, I thought he was brilliant in HI-FIDELTY, and you don't go wrong with Mel or Jim or Robert De Niro. It's just mind boggling!" (CPT/AB/RGS)
